前回、地球が喜ぶ仕事として有機栽培についてブログを書きました。今回は、経済学的な観点から、みていきます。「お金と手間暇がかかって、採算が取れない」なんてイメージがあってなかなかメリットが見出せない、と思うのは早計かも。有機栽培の農家が増えれば、長期的に持続可能な生産を実現できます。無農薬有機栽培は単に環境や健康に良いというだけでなく、長期的にみて、経済的な持続可能性にも寄与するでしょう。

Last time, I wrote a blog post about organic farming as work that pleases the Earth. This time, let’s look at it from an economic perspective. It might be premature to think there aren’t many benefits because of the perception that it costs a lot of money and effort without profitability. As the number of organic farming households increases, it becomes possible to achieve sustainable production in the long run. Pesticide-free organic farming not only benefits the environment and health but also contributes to long-term economic sustainability.
Internalizing External Costs (Reflecting True Production Costs)
It’s a bit of an abstract concept, but let me explain. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides often generates negative externalities (side effects of economic activities that cause harm to others). This includes water pollution and ecosystem destruction. Pesticide-free organic farming aims to internalize these externalities by incorporating environmental costs into the agricultural production process. Economically, this reflects the true production costs, enabling more sustainable pricing.
Long-term Resource Management
In economics, optimal resource allocation means utilizing resources not only for the present but also to maximize utility over the future. Pesticide-free organic farming aims to preserve natural resources like soil and water over the long term, ensuring that these resources can be used by future generations. Given the historical conflicts over water, resource management is a critical issue for humanity.
Price Mechanisms and Shifts in Demand
In a market economy, consumer choices communicate messages to producers through price mechanisms. If demand for organic produce increases, prices rise, and the market adjusts to supply more organic products. Consequently, this encourages producers to transition to pesticide-free organic farming, potentially shifting the entire economy towards an environmentally friendly direction. Prices are determined by supply and demand, and I hope this leads to increased awareness.

Pesticide-free organic farming encourages innovation in this field, promoting new agricultural methods and technological developments. This is expected to yield efficient and sustainable agricultural practices. Innovation is essential for economic growth, and organic agriculture can serve as a new source. While the 20th century suggested that “economy and the environment cannot coexist,” the 21st century might establish a new standard: “economy and the environment can coexist.”
Building a Sustainable Economy
Ultimately, pesticide-free organic farming contributes to building a sustainable economy in a circular manner. By minimizing agriculture’s impact on the environment, it reduces concerns about resource issues, the health of the planet, and people’s well-being, ensuring long-term sustainability. This type of economy could ensure stability and healthy growth in the future.
Pesticide-free organic farming offers numerous economic benefits. It’s a challenge that policymakers, producers, and consumers should collaborate on. Toward a sustainable future, pesticide-free organic farming is indeed one of the crucial elements.
